I suppose that it’s hopeless, but I never got over your face And each time I see you, I fall once again for your grace Your eyes are blue oceans, so wise and so deep but so far And if I can’t reach that ocean I’ll watch my dreams float by in a jar Sitting with Buddha, I heard the New Morning’s light come true Though my hands were held against me, I spent one of my better days with you I’m sorry I was so awkward, so useless, so clumsy, so lame But I wasn’t sleeping and nobody’s taught me this game Now September’s light is gone and two years will carry on leaving me behind To long for you to hold me and to let me be one with your mind As I remember the warmth of the thought that you’d somehow be mine Oh I want to be back there in the glow of your smile’s sunshine I want to believe things could happen again with you Stood up on my birthday, I couldn’t stand in the end I fell down upon you before you walked away with our friend I was climbing the ladder that leads up your long golden hair But I slipped on the rungs and was left like a snowflake in air Now the fire smolders on 'neath my skin like a velveteen shroud And if I light this candle, well, I don’t think that I can put it out Because the sound of your voice makes me realize what living is for With a strong heart so gentle, you leave me trembling in awe I want to believe things could happen again with you I need to believe things could happen again with you Now some girl she won’t call me, it doesn’t matter, I’d just let her slide Because at the end of the day, I would rather have you by my side But I know it’s all in vain and the best I can do is just sigh I knew that I’d miss you, so why didn’t I kiss you goodbye?

Tumbleweed 04:03
This old train keeps on wandering The coal smoke leaves tarnishes on the ring I don’t care if the sun don’t shine I might despair if you’re not mine But I’ll watch this train go flickering down the line I can’t see what’s coming 'round the bend I left my head out in the rain again And I won’t mind if you’re not here To help me find my golden year I’ll hold this ash when you finally disappear I’ll wait a while For weeping willows to smile I know it’s alright in your eyes But when you arrive, I’ll act surprised Watch the steam train puff its way over the hill This old weed keeps me tumbling My eyes are heavy and I’m fumbling Through the gate to your front door I might be late, but can I have some more Of the love you set aside for me to store?

One of these days I’ll stop opening doors And peering through windows Where I see my reflection Turn away from itself This I promise again Let’s just go to sleep now And see what the sun brings When it slips through my blinds To dance on my ceiling With shining steps It wasn’t here today But I don’t think I’ll sleep tonight The clock’s not as fast as I first thought But it still keeps on moving O, why am I so afraid to smile?

I’m hiding from hunters And covering my tracks In the forest of fresh fallen snow Far from the shadows Of empty smokestacks Where the angels of science fear to go Now the factory stands broken But moss coats the rust Seeds land on concrete, but still grow All is unspoken But I’ve got you sussed Show me the way, and I’ll go Will this knot of highways Like a ribbon unravel? So I can finally let you know Now the once mighty asphalt Has gone back to gravel I wish there was only one way to go But roads must entwine On the unharvested plain I hope that the west wind still will blow If I make you mine And say goodbye to the pain You know I could never let you go

The sky was open when they took the athletes down In the soft German hills so blue And the village was rent with the guns’ echoing sound Airplanes on fire in seventy-two And with weighted hearts, they took the bodies home While the policeman laughed in his tears Slain by their brothers, in coffins and regal domes Following the words of prophets and seers When birds fly high As eagles or doves Put the pieces of the shield back together, my love Two pillars of salt have been blown down in the wind The city of silver weeps in flame But where there is vengeance, there is nothing to rescind The innocent always get the blame There are those who point fingers at all the endless ends Washing the blood all over our hands While sorrowful spiders build walls around their friends Making a rope out of broken strands When birds fly high As eagles or doves Put the pieces of the shield back together, my love Now please hold your feathers so delicately in hand Dust off your pen and shuffle your papers Before you head out to where the pavement turns to sand Stand in the ruins of burning skyscrapers And Ezra sits grinning with his hands on folded cards With Jesse Jackson and Sinn Fein Praising a cross of iron that stands on steel glass shards The crescent moon cries on the plain When birds fly high As eagles or doves Put the pieces of the shield back together, my love

I felt so sorry when I left the bar A bit too early, twice so far You looked so happy by the bank machine The prettiest girl that I’ve ever seen A broken heart in an open hand I’ll never make it to the promised land Because you fell asleep and you looked so at peace But I had to wake you when I reached for my keys “No-one’s ever done this before!” Declared the drunk poet as he reached for the door “I bid good-night to the gentle dark Eighteen straight whiskeys, when it hits, you’ll know the spark.” Now the ground was moving like I felt I was drugged The dishes toppled over when old Atlas shrugged Singing your song at the top of my lungs I couldn’t climb the ladder because I slipped on the rungs Lady Macbeth got her tearful goodbye I felt so low after feeling so high Since you came along to twist ‘round by mind When I unravel it all, you know that I’ll find No-one’s ever done this before Declared the drunk poet as he reached for the door “I bid good-night to the gentle dark Eighteen straight whiskeys, when it hits, you’ll know the spark.” And now it’s over I think I can rest It was kind of fun, I suppose, for a test But I saw your friend the other night on the bus The fool sitting next to her was making a fuss The Duke Boys were talking about music and hair And I sat beneath her smiling stare When your wait is done, you know I’ll still be there Bob Dylan once said I ain’t goin’ nowhere “No-one’s ever done this before!” Declared the drunk poet as he reached for the door “I bid good-night to the gentle dark Eighteen straight whiskeys, when it hits, you’ll know the spark.”

Is it enough just to let it be? Is it enough just to let it be? I’ve done my work, I’m coming in from the field I’ve reaped my harvest, now please let me yield I’m going away, please take care of your pa He’ll need you strength ‘cause the road is so far Away, away Is it enough just to let it be? Is it enough just to let it be? The corn still grows, the trees still fall And the stars shall shine down upon you all I want to sleep for ten thousand decades Let your love come down as my body fades Away, away Is it enough just to let it be? Is it enough just to let it be? Open your arms, I’m coming in from the cold I’m leaving this town where streets are all sold For a golden vase and a pocket of ash I saw it all disappear in a golden flash Away, away Is it enough just to let it be? Is it enough just to let it be? I’m a-letting go of the seeds I sow Let the river flow ‘round the stones I throw I’m a-letting go of the seeds I sow...

about

A strong collection of songs that constitutes the culmination of many years of recording on a Marantz four-track machine. Like Songs For A River, orleansontario, the first album put out under the Desoto name, blends literary classic rock styles with millennial indie aesthetics.

On this record, though, there is a much greater emphasis on the electric guitar as shown by the dark fuzztone squall "It Wasn't Here Today" and the multilayered post-rock anthem "Hymn From Addie". Elsewhere, "May The Empty Smokestacks Collapse" with its analog synths, fuzzy loops, and tape echo psychedelia points to the expanded sonic palate of later Desoto records.

In 2018, for its fifteenth anniversary, orleansontario was restored, remixed, and remastered from the original tapes.

Note:

Most of this album was recorded on a Marantz four track tape recorder. The original tapes have been digitally transcribed, remixed, and remastered, but due to the lo-fi nature of these recordings, the sound quality is still compromised by the nature of the medium and the original recording process.

Some tracks on the album, however, also feature digital recording. "May The Empty Smokestacks Collapse" and "Hymn From Addie" had their backing tracks recorded on tape with overdubs added digitally (only a few parts were added to "May The Empty Smokestacks Collapse" whereas "Hymn From Addie" required a massive amount of digital recording). Unfortunately, the hard drive on which these songs were recorded was fried during a thunderstorm in 2004 so the multitrack files for "Hymn From Addie" and "Fifty Thousand Country Songs Can't All Be Wrong / Falling For Grace Again" (the latter being recorded entirely digitally) have been irrevocably lost.

A relatively satisfactory mix of "Fifty Thousand Country Songs Can't All Be Wrong / Falling For Grace Again" was created in 2004, and this version is used here. "Hymn From Addie" was also remixed in 2004, but while this mix was an improvement on the original, poorly done 2003 mix, it was still unsatisfactory. As such, the 2018 master is a composite of the 2003 mix and the 2004 remix that only somewhat ameliorates the poor sound quality.

The multitrack files for "May The Empty Smokestacks Collapse" were backed up (presumably due to the smaller file size). A completely new mix was created by restoring and remixing the original four track tape and then resynching this new mix with the elements recorded digitally back in 2003. Like the other tracks on the record, this new mix still suffers from sound quality issues due to the original recording, but constitutes an improvement on the original version nonetheless (just how much an improvement is left to the listener).
