Such a lame fort
In a saltpan minefield haze
They stroll the deserts sands in sport
For days and days and days
To a long forgotten colony
Where train tracks fear to tread
The jackals fight amongst themselves
Now the elephants are dead here in the dead heart
As far from the sea
As a man can surely be
We took a caravan from Tripoli
To find the world’s most lonely tree
Now we’ll take the town by Toyota truck
By morning the market make
Or else find that we’re shit out of luck
When the sun begins to bake
And it’s not much fun
When you’re stuck in the dead heart
No matter where you run
You’re still stuck in the dead heart
The slavers and the sheiks may make
Their redline guarantees
But what chance can you really have
With neighbours such as these
Neath the glare and suffocating air
The basin drains to dust
With nowhere to go, the river flow
Evaporates to rust here in the dead heart
We set up camp amongst the bones
Where the raiders ply their trade
When the sickly air came upon us there
The doc was first to fade
Now we hide from our assassins’ hands
In a palace with armed guards
Lost our letters to the sands
Give the Bashar all our regards
‘Cause it’s not much fun
When you’re stuck in the dead heart
You will learn to hate the sun
When you’re stuck in the dead heart
No matter where you run
You’re still stuck in the dead heart
There’s nothing to be done
When you’re stuck in the dead heart
Such a lame fort
In a saltpan minefield haze
We stroll the desert sands in sport
For days and days and days and days and days
As far from the sea
As a man can surely be
Midst the skulls we had a cup of tea
A land-locked land and inland sea
Now the desert’s heading south
And our fortunes follow suit
The mission plots its method out
As there’s nothing left to loot
So we hide from our assassins’ hands
In a palace with armed guards
Lost our letters to the sand
Give the Bashar all our regards
‘Cause it’s not much fun
When you’re stuck in the dead heart
No matter where you run
You’re still stuck in the dead heart
You will learn to curse the sun
When you’re stuck in the dead heart
Bend your knee and kiss the gun
‘Cause you’re stuck in the dead heart

“Letters From Emma Laing”
In the gardens of her father’s house
The left behind explorer’s spouse
Waits for letters to come on home
She was courted as a stepping stone
The Consul kept a chaperone
And now he sends his love through the BCO
And then:
From papers strewn across the sand
Reports return in unknown hand
When she heard the awful news, she upped and sung the blues
She writes:
“O! These dreadful cruel reports
Dash at last hopes of fast return
You need only send the word and I’d be right by your side
Let my holding arms be shields against the dancing desert swords
And you and I, together we’ll lie
And our souls both take flight on the same burning spear.”
A widowhood would soon begin
She awaits the word on the western wind
But the sand claims all it can and the letters never came
“Letters To Emma Laing”
From the gardens of your father’s house
I set out for the South
On our honeymoon I left without your heart
To find my fame in Timbuktu
To make the name I give to you
Charting out the map that marks the distance we’re apart
I tried to write some lines
I tried a thousand times
But the words just wouldn’t muster from the pen on to the page
So I’ll keep on keeping on
Let the Consul pass my kisses on
As a would-be poet warlord you’d love me just the same
In a land where letters come with daggers laid inside
And the ruined cathedral hills stare out with blue hyena eyes
Though I climbed your family tree and it’s still one ten in the shade
But it’s all for king and country, if I reach the coast I’m made
And I wrote it all for you
My journal to Timbuktu
But I lost it in the sands where the wind fades all away
In the gardens of her father’s house
The lonesome lost explorer’s spouse
Waits and weeps for letters that never came

In defence of “I am what I am”
They say banking’s such a lovely scam
So let’s all go out on the lam
And keep it all inside
Where’d that oily flim flam go?
He left about an hour ago
And where he’s gone I just don’t know
But I think he went inside
We make the rules with gold and jewels’ demand
Stooges, fools, and other tools be damned
The circle’s work just won’t shirk itself
To be a jerk’s the utmost perk of wealth
A dropped dime makes the wires glow
They caught his tail in Mexico
And took him down in Buffalo
The call came from inside
Now a dollar buys a two-bit show
He recollects the fields of blow
And all the things he must forego
That he cannot get inside
Don’t get caught with what you ought not got
The drunken sot learns what’s what for naught
His careless mess leaves us more or less annoyed
Upside the head, the ol’ right there, Fred’s deployed

You keep on out, you keep on out
You keep on out tonight
You keep on out...
Did you get the Funyuns, Marv?
Be sure to put a little spin out on the Dan
Beware the flim flam man
He says it's all his plan
You keep on out, you keep on out
The hum is getting loud
You keep on out
Be proud you're allowed to doubt
The clouds are all about
And gravity settles in tonight
It all comes from without
The shadow behind the light
Cause I got the curve and I got the swerve
And a sign on the door says "do not disturb"
It just gets on my nerves
So pass the Funyuns, Marv
A little volume elevation on the Dan, if you can
Clever monkeys on the lam
The gravity's thick and sure to stick around
His dirty tricks are bound to kick you down
The fire came in collusion with a friend
Let's conspire with our illusions to the end
In defense of I am that I am
They say I'm nothing but a lovely sham
And by Myself I'd be surely damned
If I were to ever step inside
Where it's bounded by the rounded curve
The smallest angle yields the greatest swerve
I'll not deserve now to be made to serve
You see, it's just a point of pride
The circle's work is just a quirk of fate
The monkeys lurk but go berserk too late
To a jealous god who'll not be mocked tonight
Your Ragnarok is quite the shock delight

Butterflies with sooty wings
A sequel to the Hittite king
I'm just edging it up in here
Let the hounding begin
Who'd've thought to make such sport
Of matters nasty, brutish, and short
Ah, but there's people living longer lives every day
"I am significant!" the little dust speck cries
With the overstated self-importance of the paranoid mind
They're giving it their best, they're giving it their all
See them scamper in a race to be first against the wall
If we all work together maybe we could make things better
But, uh, I don't like the looks of that guy standing over there
He's got an interesting haircut and I don't mean to stare but
I heard in an early draft they were going to bring a horse on stage
But I guess not
All aboard for the shit show sure shot
A gathering of an ugly mob and they all want what you got
With uniformed henchmen I could achieve my potential
I'd been running this town inside a couple of weeks
Yeah, baby!
Who wants to be first against the wall?
Life is fun, y'all
I don't want to hear about your diet
I could use a little quiet
It's been a slice, my dear, but now I've got to go
I've got a body, I've got a soul
If you wanna get to heaven then you've got to get cold
My laws! Is that the time?
So goodbye to your life in black and white
You're always justified when you're on the losing side
So fuck off with your goose and go hide under your cloud
Could have maybe made it through if you only didn't type so loud
Life is fun!!

The dumbfucks are out in force tonight
And all the orders pecked
They looked askance because he stepped off the grind
Not all his thoughts are quite correct
We’re taking umbrage
We’ll eat our own
We’re usually the first to cast a stone
While the fascies fall in line on time
Are you subaltern enough to speak?
There's no time to out-meek the weak
We keep up our critique
Blind eye for eye
Our credo and our cry:
“Who’s more held down than I?”
Protest kids shoot photo-essays of themselves
You know they don’t give a fuck about anybody else
They got their brightly coloured badges and their ornamental scars
But it lacks a certain magic till they get drunk and crash their cars
The fat man's making a pile
He's got all the rubes roused and riled
They say a vanguard party is not a long term plan
So let’s raise a cup of tears to the burning universal man
Hotcha!

I hear emoting’s now the rage
And that all the world’s a stage
The only thing I want to see
Is all o’ y’all’s eyes up on me
It’s all gone to my head
Called “Dawg” for street cred
I beg your pardon
I sing with a hard-on
When I’m shilling for The Man
I get my beats out of a can
Heartland rock with frosted tips
Harmonize with Intel chips
I’ll learn to work the microphone
And sing just what I feel
And maybe drop a hit ring tone
And score my record deal
I earn my wages
Playing Las Vegas
The current plague is
We all get stages
I’d like to teach the world to sing
In corporate synergy
Got the right one, baby, got the real thing
I like my dinners free
And I know that I’ll be bound
When I finally chart my sound
You can’t hop an old jet plane
In the cold November rain
The fleeting while that is star power
Hey brother, can you spare a quarter hour
It gets no better than when a pro
Gets his mitts on all the dough
I’d like to teach the world to sing
I’m a personality
Got a silly hat back stage, if you like that kind of thing
Just keep your eyes on me
Keep your eyes on me ‘cause I got a silly hat
I earn my wages
Sing in Las Vegas
I beg your pardon
I lost my hard-on

A world grown grey
With crops of Cain passed over
A black sun bears the light
From me come the pox and plague
To trouble minds
Send gross fumes to the brain
Windy fools with castle airs
Excepted from our list of cares
Here it comes around again
With wheels amiss and shedding skin
A pint of honey yields a gallon of gall
Whom the wind fears hears the call
Circle the crossroads
With a nine-knotted string
Seven garments peeled away
Seven gates sealed in grey
Waste the flesh
To powder in the fire
Pale rider takes the saddle
Men will die on account of cattle
Now the bull and the elephant
May be as powerful as Goliath
But they have not the understanding
To build the road they take
Their death is at hand
Their kingdoms overthrown
The goat and the dog
Shall rest on their throne
Here it comes around again
Rising like the full moon on the right
Man’s ruin is the Devil’s dish
Drop the name and make a wish
I set my seat
Above the stars
Command treasure
Scatter flies
Seize the snake that guards the way
The narrow way beyond the road
All spirits in their proper shape
Round and forgotten by an ape
Emissary goat
Here comes the crouching one
Squatting black bulk
Dressed up in the skins of cattle

It was such a long strange trip
we forgot we’re on a ship.
The boys and girls just ate it up
Why see the world when you can make it up?
I’ve been through the bowels of whales
and lived to tell tall tales
of my fleet of paper sails.
I’ll go and cast my stage
with the Spirit of the Age
and other creatures of the page.
It’s a wide, wild world of words.
Let’s get lost in far off lands
made up by many hands.
Check the map beneath the sands.
Off to parts unknown
and the lands beyond the pole
inside the earth where the Saucer People go.
The blessed will ever rest with the weary in the west
It’s just fiction and needs no contradiction
You can take it from the man
A weave of dreams and borrowed trips
makes up my handy manuscript,
and if you’re sleeping on the street,
you can still take shade underneath your feet.
Oh, you’re just talking shit
in the barbershop of the headless man,
but it seems legit
‘cause no-one likes a voice of reason now.
Let’s pretend to become what we pretend
and in the end we’ll pretend that we’re not penned.
Made marvellous in memory
with Thoth & Co.’s old remedy,
into being I shall will these worlds
and sling ‘em to the rubes,
shape bourgeois attitudes
‘til such a shit show shambles on towards the sun.
