Barrow 04:15
At some lost point high on the smooth open plain The sky and the soil are joined for a time and then forgotten again In centuries untold, the legions of old Chased ghosts of armies into the depths of the steppe With fish for wings the mask of antlers brings the horse the swiftness of the stag Where goes the crow? Only the crow will know On glittering saddles and with mirrors in hand They build up a barrow from the belly of the land Raised earth packed in ice Stands guard till the dead will rise Whoso dares disturb this sleep Leave this place dark, leave this place deep Lost in rest beneath the cairn Lies dreaming the nomad king Roll, roll wagon roll over the lands of the dead Roll, roll wagon roll, the funeral procession is led The Scythian horde lets loose its lost lord Like dragon lies dead on his hoard The one who once wandered on now wanders on the way beyond Open the barrow, trespass the land In steals the light with greedy grasping hands To loot the last lost trace of what the wind could not erase Hidden out of time in the belly of the land The pasture shall pass Graves grow back into grass A heart of boulders packed in ice When sunlight enters the dead will rise On the steppe, the sleepless steppe The war machine rides out tonight Cries to the west, “Let us rest! Let us rest! To mess with our tombs is to pick an ugly fight.”

Well it's such a lovely day and I must be on my way Fell asleep all alone, when you dream you're never on your own And here steps up a man and he says he's got a plan If we all do what we ought, we can defend our way of thought We'll never want for hunger now And we’ll all feel a bit younger now We could make our city swell, but it never goes as planned They’re no angels that fell, they’re just some chimps that learned to stand So once more into the breach, the leviathan’s on the beach Though it’s always out of reach for each, we built our city out of speech Never get the better of the strong In the battle for what's right and wrong They always ask to take one for the team Our perfect scheme is but a madman's dream Let's reseed the human race in a high and lonely place No silver wire, no hrududu, a nice respite from the human zoo And to be sure we left our trace, we'll shoot a rocket into space For the joy of the skies above, we taught all our machines to love The angels sing the final chorus The upper ring of a Stanford Torus Standing by just in case We're raptured up into outer space

I’m going to lay down on the line Where the ley lines lay down Going to lay the ley line down Laid down on the ground A ball of gently focused light Gathers in a rounded kind of way Where the fall of every spoken slight Runs to the edge of the day When it’s clear and out of mind I’ll go out and clear my mind And it’s clear I must be kind The clear mind clear out time There's a cloud out and it wants to storm But we can surely hedge our bets To stand up to a monstrous form Is to court an early death But we're not headed there just yet And we can surely keep our heads Till nothing else is left

Captain, o Captain I’m in a race against the hacks But I’m lagging behind I cannot keep pace so I’ll cover my tracks As the birds set sail for the morning sun On the wing The hills sing a song in signal and snow Of world affairs and the falconer’s son The courtiers are gone on the long letting go They take to the air and they go on the run And the boy they left behind to guard the birds Has scanned the sky so long it hardly hurts When the falcons come to take his words Ninety thousand miles high That’s how high the Great Birds fly They soar and they soar but they don’t know why Ninety thousand miles high Big wings need big winds It burns and it burns It burns and it burns til it burns off the pain It burns and it burns It burns and it burns til just the burning remains Make it rain, make it rain

I found my town where the cattle graze By the levels, we’ve been here for days The leopards face each other in pairs Neither time nor sun can break their stares When the past comes up for air Build your home on the bones of the dead Tusks of boar will guard the door While I’m under the floor Dreaming I’ve been here before Dreams of breath, dreams of violence Dreams of death, dreams of silence Settling down, settle in town Settle for less with walls all around The leopards face each other in pairs When we tread upon their bones The dead intrude on daily life So we replaster the skull with care Laid back in the grave down there Interred in layers beneath the floor Remembering what happened here before Lives concealed return revealed When the blades are unsealed So cast protection spells I shore up this mound Against being forgotten The dead on which it is found Lie buried and rotten I’ve grown so attached to this place This town found where the cattle graze Now they dismantle the walls with care Buildings filled-in, reliefs retrieved And reassembled elsewhere Up there where I hear there’s fresh air The leopards face each other in pairs Underground we set down a history When it’s found how it sound’s a mystery Keep it down, keep it hidden We all end up in the midden A necessary movement to another world

The days curl up like smoke On the way to going home The world waits to be woke With the other bubbles in the foam The circles swirl and orbs absorb the storm Until the final fulfilled form All the shells lodged on the cliff Take all the waves have to give When there’s shadows at large And the next cairn’s too far And wind drives on hard And the river runs deep And the riverman’s asleep All the bliss that’s missed exists Little ripples in the mist On the way back home Pretty bubbles in the foam In gathers the dark And other shadows at large Take root n the heart And they turn into stars Set down in charts Fiery marks offset the dark Far-off sparks with broken hearts There’s a wire, a silver wire That draws the flame from the fire And it’s wound all around the ground And it never makes a sound Split the silence with a start

Looking for a ticket out Circling voice repeats in rounds tonight Head dress down, I mean, disco down Ear spitting snatches peace With this cope no strategy The hammering comes from within Carpentry at all hours The walls are worried, the walls are worried “Why?” chirps the phone “Why don’t you talk about yourself some more?” No stop no fence The plow is coming, the plow is coming It’s on its way It will find me It shall know my hiding place Here she comes, and she’s smelling fear O! Always with the worry There’s no stress but which we find ourselves Constant thought aloud going round and round The walls are worried (always with the worry) Cabin fever discourse cramp Run run run, get out while you still can You fool, you fool, you threw it all away Against the falling wall the hammer takes its toll Clatters take the quiet Keep kine and move on

It's the little things While we wait with wasted wings A seabird sings Of what the west wind brings And that a hard rain's gonna come And the part that knows I'm going wrong Says I don't belong Not since she's been gone And all the things I should have said and done It gets a little rough some times Gets a little better every day It didn't go as planned but that's just fine Sing a song to ease a troubled mind And that just may keep the blues at bay And still I think of her I can't put things back the way they were No love is pure In a world that hurts And we all want someone to hold on to While the world around us falls apart And leaves the heavens with a broken heart So let's hold on just a little more Till the stones that we once held in awe Return to stones just being stones You fade away; I'm left alone When the dawn comes to take your dream

It was such a lovely day I was thinking of you And how plans laid just fade away You thought I’d leave you and you cried I whispered to you “I’m still here,” but then I lied Hey, how was your day? I was putting the photographs away when you rang in And you might've heard me say “I’ve been sitting here alone waiting for you to come on home” It’s time to settle up now It’s time to start all over again Crumpled petals on the floor I must be more careful Sure could use a little quiet And in a calm between the fires You would be my love you said Smiling, tucked away in bed Thinking of the days that we’d’ve had Now we’ll grow cold not old and fat It fades to embers in the ash A love we laid to rest, I guess that we both left Could’ve maybe stuck it out if you only didn’t type so loud But if you left with some new guy, well, at least I didn’t make you cry I tried so hard not to break your heart That I paid no mind when you broke mine And I don’t know just who first let go When we fell apart and broke our hearts in two (And now I miss you)

"O! I have been around so long" Said the Outline to the Shadow "You get behind me while I wander where I will Cast iron in the meadow" And I will lay me down In the lap of the leaves in the shade of the trees The crooked tree, the useless tree Who never lacks the axe attacks For what it hasn't got I once forgot a golden thought Ah, we just didn't dance enough Let us tend to order now here upon our house O! but such a fool as I Beheld a shapeless well and in we fell You can never tell Hey man, did you hear that voice? Who was here for the emptiness Who was here before the emptiness That's why they made the world's first ghost And the this and the that Standing back to back Between the trace and the map The hollow hole holds its lack And by the wheel and the whir And the amplifier's purr We will feel no more hurt It'll be just as it were

about

A collection of small, relatively stripped-down songs, quickly recorded over a period of three years in between other projects. More intimate than previous albums, this record leans towards a more acoustic sound, though the fuzz-tone guitars still pop up in places.
